Eszter Dombi

Postdoctoral Research Scientist

Eszter joined the Cellular High Throughput Screening group at the Target Discovery Institute in June 2022 as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist. Part of a highly collaborative team she is responsible for leading phenotypic small compound screens.

Eszter graduated from the University of Bath with a degree in Biology with Professional Placement. She spent her professional placement year in the Mitochondrial Genetics group at the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health, University of Oxford, led by Professor Joanna Poulton. Her project focused on the role of mitophagy in the pathology of mitochondrial diseases.

Following the completion of her bachelor’s degree Eszter returned to the Poulton group for her Ph.D. where she used high content imaging to screen fibroblasts derived from mitochondrial disease patients for dysregulated mitophagy and for the identification of small compounds that could modulate this recycling mechanism within cells. Eszter completed her Ph.D. at the University of Oxford in 2019 and carried on working in the field of mitochondrial disease. Her first postdoctoral project investigated the therapeutic potential of nucleoside supplementation in mitochondrial DNA depletion syndromes with a focus on POLG and TWNK mutations.

In 2020, Eszter joined the research group of Dr Katharina Schlacher at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas. Applying her extensive background in mitochondrial biology she investigated mitochondrial DNA instability in cellular models of Fanconi Anemia.
