Researchers who wish to undertake consultancies may elect to do so either through: i) Oxford University Consulting (OUC); ii) or privately/independently.

A researcher electing to undertake work through the OUC must first obtain approval from the Business Administrator and the Head of Department. In order to do that s/he will have to attest that:

  • The proposed consultancy does not create a conflict of interest with their work at the University
  • The proposed consultancy is permitted under the terms of any external research grant or contract in which they are involved
  • They will act in a manner consistent with the University's Intellectual Property Policy

Researchers who wish to consult privately should first obtain the approval of the Business Manager and Head of Department. Researchers will need to formally attest that:

  • The proposed consultancy does not create a conflict of interest with their work at the University
  • The proposed consultancy is permitted under the terms of any external research grant or contract in which they are involved
  • They will act in a manner consistent with the University's Intellectual Property Policy
  • They hold appropriate insurance
  • They indemnify the University against any financial risk
  • They will make it clear to the client that the University is not involved in the consultancy agreement in any way
